Chapter 46
Grandma May’s words lingered in the air as Zachary left the room, a slight frown forming on his face. Despite his indifference, there was a nagging feeling deep inside him. He wasn’t sure what it was, but something about Serenity’s encounter with Mr. Bill didn’t sit right with him. Was it jealousy? No, it couldn’t be. He didn’t get jealous. It was simply that he didn’t like the idea of someone else getting too close to his wife.
He was aware that Grandma May had orchestrated the whole thing. She knew full well that Serenity would be at Beans and Cream with her date, and she had used that knowledge to get a reaction from him. As he drove home, Zachary couldn’t help but replay the moment in his mind, imagining Serenity and Mr. Bill chatting away. His mind kept drifting back to that brief look of surprise on Serenity’s face when he walked in.
When he finally reached the house, he found the door ajar, just as Serenity had promised. She was already in the living room, sitting on the couch, focused on her phone. She glanced up when she heard his footsteps.
“Did you get the desserts?” Serenity asked, her voice light, almost teasing.
Zachary simply nodded, holding the bag in his hand. “Here.”
“Thanks,” she said, standing up to take the desserts from him.
The silence that followed was thicker than usual, neither of them sure how to break it. Serenity, still holding the box of desserts, looked at him for a moment before speaking.
“You didn’t have to come all the way here just to bring them,” she said, trying to ease the tension.
